Tugu Kunstkring Paleis at Menteng Jakarta

April 20th, 2017. I got invitation from Public Relation Manager at TUGU Hotels and Restaurants. I heard about their hotels and restaurants. But I’ve never went to. So, when they invited me, I think it’s my time to visit one of their restaurants. Tugu Kunstkring Paleis.

IMG_6639

The grand historical building originally housed the Fine Arts Circle of the Dutch East Indies (Nederlandsch-Indische Kunstkring of the Dutch East Indies) and was opened on the 17 April 1914. This organization was founded for the first time on 1 April 1902 in Batavia, with the purpose to promote the practice of and the enthusiasm for the fine and decorative arts of the Indies. This building had various functions, as it stayed faithful to its mission to promote anything related to the arts. It featured various creative arts between 1934 and 1939 as well as world-class masterpieces of Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Paul Gauguin, Marc Chagall and the likes. One of the wings of this building also housed a very popular café that sold fine food and wine, known as Stam en Weynes.

When I stepped inside, I was stunned. Elegant and mysterious atmosphere with dim lights all around the place. I came for dinner so it’s already dark outside. There were some foreigners came for the gallery, and some people came for dinner too, like me. I took some photos but not much, because it’s too dark. It’s a beautiful place, indeed.

In April 2013, this legendary building of Bataviasche Kunstkring has been reopened under the name the TUGU KUNSTKRING PALEIS, and brought back to life by Tugu Hotels & Restaurants Group. Without changing the beautiful palatial architecture, Tugu has breathed in new life into the building through majestic interiors, filling it with a vast collection of beautiful artworks, in creating an atmosphere that represents Tugu’s mission: the art, soul and romance of Indonesia. The Tugu Kunstkring Paleis is a proud center of art exhibitions, as well as other events with high appreciation to the beauty of arts and history. It also houses a large event space with the capacity up to 1000 people, a gallery/shop that features beautiful artworks, jewels, lifestyle products and other design items, a fine restaurant, a grand elegant lounge as well as a tea house.

The Traditional Grand Rijsttafel (translated as the Rice Table) featured in each property of the Tugu Hotels & Restaurants Group, portrays the sumptuous social feast that used to be celebrated by the Dutch plantation lords when they hosted their honorable guests, starting from around the 1910s. The Grand Rijsttafel is a display of the richness of the spices that grew in Indonesia as well as the culinary arts of the indigenous people, as seen from the many different flavors which were all brought together to make the one elaborate Rijsttafelmeal.

Grand Rijsttafel Betawi of Tugu Kunstkring Paleisis usually served in the ‘Ruang Diponegoro’, with a capacity of 85 seats. The waiters, uniformed in Betawi circa 1910 style, present the dishes in the artistic ‘pikulan-pikulan’ Betawi. This ceremonial dining is enlivened by musicians who usually perform the festive, traditional music of the ‘Ondel-Ondel Betawi’, a pair of colorful giants characteristic of old Jakarta street parade.

MAIN COURSE

Tahoe Telor 68k

Crispy fried tofu with eggs served with sweet soya lime kaffir

One of the best tahoe telor I’ve ever tried. Tasted delicious with sweet flavour dan rich texture. The fried tofu was delicate and well-seasoned. The combination of the spices were also amazing. It’s delightful and I still craving at it when I was already at home. I think I will be back for this tahoe telor. Funny thing, the PR Manager ordered it one for himself because he loved it so much. Hmmm.. I wish I could help him finish the dish hahahahaha..

IMG_6658

Duivelse Kip (Ayam Setan) 98k

Attention – for lovers of hot food only: aromatic roasted chicken dressed with a sauce dominated with fresh chilis, dried chillies, green curry mustard and tomatoes

Duivelse Kip means Devilish Chicken. It’s Dutch language. It meant to be very spicy *like the devil?* hahaha. It’s a good thing that they ordered this dish less spicy. The chicken was tender and delicate. And I love the skin hahahaha.. Sinful enough.

IMG_6662 IMG_6664

Sayoer Boentjis met Udang Api-api en Telor Asin 68k

Sauteed green bean, shrimp, sweet corn with crispy salted egg

Not really my favourite, but it’s pretty good. The Udang Api-api was crunchy with appetizing flavour. I love green beans. It’s also crunchy texture with sweet flavour. I was hypnotized by the tahoe telor, that’s why this was my last option LOL.

DESSERT

Kue Pancong with Coconut Ice Cream 58k

Fried savoury coconut cake – A National betawi traditional cake coconut top with young coconut ice cream

My childhood’s dessert. My Dad was always brought this home when he went to traditional market. Of course this was different from those traditional kue pancong. It’s more classy with additional delicious ice cream. Recommended!

IMG_6672 IMG_6673

Apelflappen 58k

Crispy apple pannekoek with cinnamon and vanilla ice cream

I never liked apple, but this one was quite good. Crumbly texture. Sweet. Tender. Delicate. Love the texture for sure. And love the puff pastry. Perfect.

IMG_6668 IMG_6669

Poffertjes 58k

Small puffed cakes served with tropical fruit compote and crusted hazelnuts

This was my favourite. Delicate texture of the puff cakes mixed with crunchy texture of the hazelnuts. Tasted very very delightful.

Poffertjes (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈpɔfərcəs] are a traditional Dutch batter treat. Resembling small, fluffy pancakes, they are made with yeast and buckwheat flour. Unlike American pancakes, they have a light, spongy texture. Typically, poffertjes are served with powdered sugar and butter, and sometimes syrup or advocaat.

Kong Djie Coffee at Ruko Gadget Gading Serpong Tangerang

April 16th, 2017. I was hungry! Hmm.. I think I should find a place that selling rice dishes. I didn’t really know Serpong area. So I let Darius gave me options. Then, voila. Kong Djie.

IMG_6474

Warung Kopi Kong Djie has a signage stating that it was established in 1945. We had coffee, teh-tarik, boiled eggs and some local cakes. The taste of the coffee and tea was just right. The price was also reasonable.

They have 2 levels, I think. But we sat on level 1, near the facade. We’re not long. Just enough time to have a nice lunch. It’s quite crowded with people bought coffee. The place wasn’t big. Just 3 or 4 tables, I guess. Well, please read my simple review below.

Nasi Tim Ayam 20k

I knew that they sell Nasi Tim. That’s why I chose this place over others. Hohoho. I ordered the Nasi Tim instantly. And I fell in love with their Nasi Tim instantly too. The mushy and tender texture was really really good. Well-seasoned and tasted appetizing. I wanted to order one more portion, but.. next time lah..

IMG_6481 IMG_6482

I saw that they have other food like Mie Belitung, Pisang Goreng, Tape Coklat Keju etc. Definitely worth to try.

Double Bond Coffee at Ruko Alicante Gading Serpong Tangerang

April 16th, 2017. After the birthday party at Pesanggrahan area, we moved to Serpong. Yaaay.. Too many coffee shops there. Too far away area from my home. Well, everybody can go to Serpong every week. Not me. I had to wait for hubby to go there. Well, our first coffee shop at the day. Double Bond.

IMG_6444

Such a meaningful name. Double Bond. It’s meant to be bonding with coffee, and bonding with friends. When I stepped inside, I saw a greyish ambiance. It’s not white, it’s not black. It’s in between. But somehow, I couldn’t feel the bonding with the place. Maybe because I was too tired? Well, let me tell you my simple review about this place.

IMG_6445 IMG_6446 IMG_6447 IMG_6450 IMG_6453 IMG_6449 IMG_6452 IMG_6451 IMG_6454 IMG_6455 IMG_6456 IMG_6457 IMG_6458

Magic Tea 35k

Darius told me that this was their signature. So I ordered it. Darius put the sugar in it. At first, I saw nothing. But then I stirred the sugar, and the magic happened. It was magic dust like in Disney movies. Poof, I became Cinderella. LOL. Tasted magical too. Just order this one when you get there. Feel the magic, taste the magic, be the magic.

IMG_6460

Black Forest 30k

It’s hubby’s order. Tasted like black forest. Great texture, though. And I knew my hubby loved it, since he had no complaint at all.

IMG_6471

We’re not hungry, so we didn’t order any food. Well, maybe next time I will be back to try their food.

Kalaku Coffee & Company at Pesanggrahan Kembangan Puri Jakarta

April 16th, 2017. I had a birthday invitation at noon around Pesanggrahan street, so before that, I planned to go to a coffee shop nearby. I looked around the venue and voila! Kalaku.

IMG_6424

From the facade, it’s quite nice, with 3-cars parking lot. But when I stepped inside, I found it quite oldies. It’s very spacious, with several tables and seats scattered neatly all around. There’re men doing some works near the barista. They politely said sorry for the inconveniences. They have smoking area outside, only 2 tables. The barista worked alone, then another man came. But, it’s only us, so they weren’t very busy. Well, please enjoy my simple review then.

IMG_6425 IMG_6427 IMG_6428 IMG_6426 IMG_6429 IMG_6433 IMG_6434 IMG_6435 IMG_6430 IMG_6431 IMG_6432 IMG_6443

Ice Lychee Tea 28k

IMG_6437

Caffee Nutella 35k

As usual, I asked the barista first. If I cannot drink coffee but I want to drink coffee, what should I drink? He said, “Caffee Nutella is good. I will make it not too coffee for you.” Yaaaaay. And it was really delicious. It’s coffee but full of Nutella. Love it. Sweet flavour with rich texture of Nutella, for sure.

IMG_6436 IMG_6441

Banana Bread 25k

It’s not really special, but it’s okay. The texture was fantastic. Sometimes they made the banana bread too crumbly. But this wasn’t like that. Tasted good too. They didn’t have many food or pastry. So, I guess it’s the banana bread or the brownies. I wasn’t in the mood for brownies. So, banana bread, then.

IMG_6439 IMG_6442

Hokkaido Cheese Tart 18k

Actually, I wasn’t very sure about this one. But, instead of brownies, I thought I prefer this one. So I ordered this hokkaido cheese tart. Its presentation wasn’t convincing enough but I think I wanted to try this one. And.. it’s delicious. The texture was great. Tasted perfectly delightful. This is what we sometimes called: “Don’t judge the book by its cover.” Recommended.

IMG_6438

Hope to be back again soon. Wanna try their other food, for sure.

[EVENT] Basque X Cuca: Sugar Rush from Bali to Noble House Mega Kuningan Jakarta

April 13th, 2017. I got the VIP invitation from Cuca Bali to a Sugar Rush event at Basque. Virginia sent me the message and asked me to choose from 3 dates. So, I chose April 13th. Yaaaay, finally I could meet up with Virginia and Kevin. Long time no see. Basque X Cuca.

IMG_6183

Remember those happy childhood moment when you had all those sweets and cakes on your hand? In collaboration with Chef Kevin Cherkas from Cuca Bali, we want to re-create those too-happy too-energetic moment to put a cherry on top of your day.

This was our first time to Basque. It’s quite a fascinating place. There’s a bunch of people dancing, and there’s a bunch of people eating. LOL. Such a different atmosphere. 🙂 But what I loved the most was when I met them again after some times. Virginia! Kevin! We miss you!

IMG_6182 IMG_6176 IMG_6177

Apple Crumble

Ginger braised apples, frothed cream, country granola, tarragon; best paired with Apple Ginger Iced Tea

Kevin always amazed me with his creation. It’s a really beautiful presentation. An apple crumble disguised into a beautiful rose. I think it’s the only apple crumble that I could eat, since it looked very much alike a rose. And I love rose. Rose is my weakness. Hahahaha. Smart Kevin! He knew I was into roses hahahahah.. It was delicious but apple is actually my hubby’s thing. So, I let him finish it.

IMG_6155 IMG_6156

Arroz Con Leche

Coconut rice, caramel banana, cinnamon perfume; best paired with Cortado Coffee

Another creative dessert from Kevin. It looked like banana, it tasted like banana, it was actually banana with coconut rice and caramel. It was on top of the banana peel. Genius! Oh well, it looked more like banana peel, but it’s actually the banana. Hahaha. Love the texture of it. Tender and sweet. One of our favourite.

IMG_6159 IMG_6160

Brownie

Warm chocolate mousse, palm sugar ice cream, cocoa cumbs; best paired with Cortado Coffee

THE BEST! Kevin said that he wanted to make it a real brownie, with the same packaging when you buy a brownies for souvenir. That’s why they presented the brownie in the carton box. And it was dabomb! Tasted delicious with fluffy and delicate texture, but of course with richer flavour. OMG! OMG! I love you Kevin! *Sorry Virginia hahaha* The fluffy texture of chocolate mousse mixed beautifully with the cocoa crumbs. DABEST!

IMG_6162 IMG_6167 IMG_6168

Tea-Ramisu

Black tea cake, grass jelly, aired mascarpone, caramelized seeds; best paired with Creme Caramel Tea

Actually, Virginia and Kevin asked me, “Have you ever tried our tiramisu?” And I answered, “Not yet. When I was in Cuca, I tried the Bali Breakfast.” Then, Kevin went back to the kitchen and made me a Tea-Ramisu. Love the texture. Love the flavour. Love Love Love. This was the second best that night! And it ended our #SugarRush night lusciously.

Thank you Virginia and Kevin. You guys are the best! Really! The best!

Kopi Es Tak Kie at Gang Gloria Glodok Pinangsia Jakarta

April 12th, 2017. It’s the legendary coffee shop. It’s been there since 1920s. Actually, it’s one coffee shop where my parents brought me when I was a kid, to eat Nasi Campur or meet up with their friends. Kopi Es Tak Kie.

IMG_6014

Established in 1927, Tak Kie’s name is derived from the word “Tak” which means wise and simple man. While the word “Kie” means easy to remember. This name has not changed since it was first established. The founder of this coffee shop wanted to teach his successors to always be low-profile and hard-working. I didn’t know then, that it will be famous hahaha. It’s my childhood memory, of course, with Mom, Dad and my siblings. Ok, back to the place now. When I was there, the lady behind the Nasi Campur there didn’t recognize me. When I told her my Dad’s name, she finally remembered me. She said, “Aaaah yes, I remember you.” 🙂

IMG_6034 IMG_6033 IMG_6018 IMG_6015 IMG_6016 IMG_6017

Kopi Susu 17k

First timer. Yup, even though I always went there, I’ve never tried their coffee. So yeah, first timer, for sure. And I love the iced one. Tasted like a legendary coffee, not those modern coffee. LOL. I heard that they used varieties beans, but always the best one. Pssst, we ordered the hot one just because we wanted to take photos of the cup with their name written. Hahahaha..

IMG_6026 IMG_6031 IMG_6032 IMG_6023

Bakmi Pangsit 30k

Not my order. It’s Cindy’s and Ivan’s order. Anyway, noodle is not my thing there. Well, it’s quite delicious but not my favourite. Maybe next time I will order a bowl for myself. Maybe. Or maybe I will ask my hubby to order it, and I just try from his bowl.

IMG_6021 IMG_6025

Nasi Campur 40k

My childhood’s Nasi Campur. Yaaaaaay. Always favourite. Trust me, the flavor never changed. My favourite was the pork satay. I remember, whenever I ate this Nasi Campur, I saved the pork satay for last. Yup, just like the quote said: save the best for last. LOL. Oh I miss those days..

IMG_6019 IMG_6022 IMG_6030 IMG_6024

I held my tears when they said to me before I went, “Send regards to your mom ya.” When I said, “Mom’s gone in July last year.” I couldn’t forget the look on their face. The lady said to me, “Sorry. We didn’t know. Sorry.” I had to hold my tears so hard. Mom, you see, they love you. Well, I will be back there again, to reminisce my childhood’s memory. Soon.
